LeaderSHIFT: Back to the Future, Not Forward to the Past

Why Life Credentials, Entreprenology and Complementary Stewardship matter now...
In this Presidential Perspective, after the success of the 2026 Graduation Ceremony held in Las Vegas 23rd September, Dr Pauline Crawford explores a defining question for the future of leadership: are women still fighting to gain a place within systems shaped by the past—or are we ready to use our experience, wisdom and imagination to create something new?
Drawing upon the Entreprenology foundation of Knowledge + Experience + Imagination, she proposes a shift beyond the unfinished arguments of gender equality towards complementary stewardship: women and men accepting shared responsibility for the world we are creating.
At the recent Order of Canada ceremony honouring Michael J. Fox, Governor General Louise Arbour offered a phrase that immediately captured my imagination:
"Back to the future has always been a much better idea than forward to the past.”
It stayed with me because it expresses a choice facing women—and society—at this moment in history.
Are we still fighting the inequalities of the past simply to earn a place in systems created by the past?
Or are we ready to draw upon everything we have learned and experienced to imagine a genuinely new horizon?
The struggle for equality has been essential. Women before us challenged exclusion, broke barriers and opened doors that had remained closed for generations. Their courage gave many of us opportunities they were denied.
But access to an established system is not necessarily the same as transforming it.
If women must continually adapt themselves to structures founded upon hierarchy, competition and linear measures of success, we may appear to be moving forward while quietly carrying the past with us.
That is “forward to the past.”
From equality to stewardship
The next phase of women’s leadership cannot be about replacing men, reversing the hierarchy or recreating an old struggle with different people at the top.
It must invite women and men into a more mature relationship with power, responsibility and one another.
I call this Complementary Stewardship.
It recognises that women and men need not become the same to have equal value. Our different experiences, perspectives and capabilities can become complementary resources for creating a healthier world.
This is the foundation of what I call a Joint Custody World: shared responsibility for our organisations, communities, economies and future generations.
The world is our collective inheritance—and our shared responsibility.
Elevating our Life Credentials
For too long, society has privileged formal qualifications while overlooking the profound intelligence developed through living.
Our Life Credentials include the wisdom formed through relationships, caring, enterprise, reinvention, adversity, cultural experience, community building and the many transitions through which we discover who we truly are.
Much of this knowledge has never appeared on a résumé.
It has often remained invisible—particularly the wisdom developed by women through the complex, interconnected realities of their lives.
But invisible does not mean insignificant.
Life Credentials are not secondary to professional expertise. They are an essential form of human intelligence and a crucial foundation for leadership in an uncertain world.
The new horizon will not be created by credentials alone. It will be shaped by people who can integrate what they know with what they have lived—and imagine what has not yet existed.
The Entreprenology mindset
This is where the legacy of Entreprenology becomes especially relevant.
Developed by Dr James R. Omps, in 1972, when Entreprenology was formally created and brings together:
Knowledge + Experience + Imagination
Knowledge helps us understand what is already known.
Experience reveals what life has actually taught us.
Imagination allows us to envision what could come next.
When these three forms of intelligence work together, education becomes more than the transfer of information. It becomes the cultivation of possibility.
The Entreprenology mindset does not ask people merely to fit into the existing world. It prepares them to recognise opportunity, solve problems creatively and participate in building a better one.
That is precisely the thinking demanded by our present moment.
Why a women-centred circular perspective matters
A women-centred perspective is not an argument for female domination. Nor is it a rejection of men.
Carrying this legacy forward now, Dr Pauline Crawford is the first Female President of IUE International University of EntreprenologyTM and leading the shift placing the value of women stewarding the way with men invited to a woman's world - not fighting the past!
It is an invitation to place women’s experiences, wisdom and ways of seeing at the centre of designing what comes next—after centuries in which they were so often positioned at the margins.
Circular leadership understands that decisions do not move in a straight line toward profit or status. They travel outward, affecting families, communities, future generations and the living world—and eventually they return to us.
It asks different questions:
What are we creating?
Who will be affected?
What must be regenerated rather than consumed?
What will we leave for those who follow?
How do we combine prosperity with humanity?
This is leadership as relationship, not merely rank. It values collaboration without abandoning courage, and care without diminishing ambition.
Back to the future
Going “back to the future” does not mean returning to a romanticised past in which women’s choices were restricted.
It means recovering wisdom that our relentless pursuit of progress may have left behind: interdependence, community, stewardship, reciprocity and responsibility for future generations.
We can carry that wisdom forward—joined with education, technology, enterprise and imagination—to create something new.
Women no longer need to prove that we can succeed according to yesterday’s definition of leadership.
The deeper question is this:
What can our Life Credentials, collective experience and imagination help us create that has never existed before?
That is the essence of LeaderSHIFT.
It is a shift from fighting only for a place within inherited systems to participating in their conscious transformation.
From authority over others to stewardship with others.
From extracting value to circulating and regenerating it.
From women versus men to women and men accepting joint custody of the future.
And from moving “forward to the past” to moving boldly—together—back to the future.
The next horizon will not be created by knowledge alone. It will emerge when we honour experience, activate imagination and recognise the full human credentials already present among us.

At the International University of Entreprenology, we believe that learning does not belong only to classrooms and qualifications. Our Life Credentials—the wisdom acquired through experience, enterprise, adversity, reinvention and imagination—are essential resources for shaping the future.
